Roxanne Coffelt recently attended a two-day invitation-only seminar and training session hosted by the International Growth and Exit Planning Association (IGEPA.) The session was attended by members of the IGEPA along with certain growth planners who received an exclusive invitation to attend.
The main focus of the training was to help the planner determine the direction a client wants to go with their business, whether they want to focus on growing the business or increasing the value of their business in anticipation of a sale or merger. This is done by determining the owner’s priorities regarding their commitment to growing the company vs. their commitment to increase the equity in their company. Even though both are very closely intertwined, they are not the same thing. For example, growing your company revenues may require taking on additional debt rather than equity. In addition, it is possible to increase the value of a company without increasing sales, by reducing the company risk. The owners’ goals determine which areas of the business should be the priority.
This training was in addition to the normal continuing education Coffelt is required to take as a CPA, but she felt the training would help her provide more value to advisory clients.
